between Brignoles (15 km) and Le Luc (15 km).

Besse offers a cool oasis to visitors in summerthanks to the natural 4
hectare lake. All around the lake you'll find people walking, fishing
or just enjoying themselves.
Besse is surrounded by 20 ha of hills covered with oak and pine, broom and thyme. In the plain below lie (800 ha of vineyards). From the top there is a surprising panorama of the whole valley of Issole (Mont St Quinis). While strolling about the narrow, paved
streets in the center of this charming old village you will discover
fountains, one of which is classified, narrow streets and the "Clock
Tower" with its belfry and campanile. Besse is also a historical town and boasts its pre revolutionary hero Gaspard de Besse, Born in 1757 this gentleman thief stole from the rich and gave to the poor,never hurting anyone save a few ladies who lost their hearts to him. The fame of this appealing rogue extended throughout Provence.

 take a walk to see : 
the Middle ages bridge which still proudly straddles to R. Issole, where you will be among pleasant surroundings of stone walls and vine fields. Take the "Croix de Bontar" road to the Issole, and the bridge is on your left.
For hikers, the St Quinis range which is to the north of the village is wonderful walking territory. At the summit you can find a chapel which was built at the end of the XVIth century. One of our favourite places in the Thèmes plateau is on the GR9 footpath which follows the ridge from where you have a magnificent view over the Pierrefeu plain, the Maures range with the Mediterranean Sea in the background.The tourist office has further information. |
